Mobile apps see a surge in consumer use and spending

Consumers spent $100 billion on mobile apps faster than ever this year and emerging markets saw a big increase in app use.

The mobile app market continues its rapid growth as consumers spend more time and money on apps than ever before, according to data.ai’s latest quarterly research. Consumers spent $100 billion on mobile apps faster than ever in 2023.

AI is here. In the third quarter, two of the top three breakout apps by download growth were AI-powered: ChatGPT and Remini, a photo editing app that uses AI to enhance photos. This trend is likely to continue as AI technology becomes more sophisticated and affordable.

Other standout areas of growth and top apps in the last quarter include:

  • Fitness apps: Strava, AllTrails, onX Hunt, and Runna.
  • Social apps: Instagram.
  • Video streaming apps: ReelShort.
  • Games: Monopoly GO.

Why we care. It might seem self-evident, but more and more consumers are using their smartphones to access the internet and interact with brands. If your brand doesn’t have a focus on mobile-first marketing, perhaps it should.

Downloads: Does the public want a better-managed version of X/Twitter? Threads, the microblogging social app launched by Meta at the start of the quarter, skyrocketed up the charts, reaching 150 million downloads faster than any other app in history. This was enough to propel it to the top spot by overall downloads in the quarter with 236 million, just ahead of TikTok’s 229 million downloads in the quarter.

However, it’s important to note that 80% of these downloads came in July, the first month of its launch. This suggests that Threads’ initial popularity was largely due to its reliance on Instagram’s large base of users to port over easily. In August and September, downloads declined to 25 million and 19.5 million, respectively.

Two other apps to pay attention to:

  • Temu: The shopping app continued its ascent in Q3. It climbed to the #3 spot after ranking as the #5 breakout app in the first half of this year. It was the top breakout app across European Union markets like France, Germany, Italy and Spain (as Threads is not yet available in the EU).
  • TikTok Music: Another app to keep an eye on is TikTok Music, which soft-launched in Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Australia and Singapore during Q3. It was the #10 breakout app in Brazil during the quarter.

Another notable trend is the increasing popularity of apps from and in emerging markets. In the third quarter, three of the six markets where consumers spend more than five hours per day in apps were in APAC: Indonesia (six hours!), Thailand and India.

App Store Fees Fall Again!

App Store Fees Fall Again! Check out the recent article from the Developers Appliance

https://www.developersalliance.org/news/app-store-fees-fall-again

It’s awesome to see more price decreases … before the government dismantles our industry.

Kudos to our app store partners for another round of price cuts! While most devs are less fixated on app store fee formulas and more on the services and tools they offer, falling fees are always a welcome surprise. Apple and Google are now taking turns sweetening their deals and fine-tuning what and how apps are treated based on evolving app monetization schemes. We’ll leave it to Google to give the details – see their blog post for more – but this is another clear sign that platforms recognize that developer success is their success too.

For years, app store competition has focused on the “supply-side”; trying to build the best tools, offer the best community experience, engage better or address store mechanics and add new features. More importantly, the underlying platforms are competing for consumers, and that means a growing demand for new features and the apps that capitalize on them. This was exactly what devs needed in a growing industry. Fees have been less of a focus – mostly because those developers most impacted are highly lucrative and successful franchises themselves. This latest round of fee cuts opens up many new monetization strategies and makes it easier for those on the cusp of success to breakthrough. Nothing but good news there!

NYNJA Group to Launch Utility Token Powering Decentralized Labor Marketplace on Bitmart August 15

With the listing of NYNJA’s utility token NYNJACOIN (NYN) on Bitmart, the company seeks to build a viable stable token economy to power the future of work via its freelance marketplace

HONG KONG, July 23, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — NYNJA, a blockchain development and software company is set to launch their cryptocurrency on one of the globe’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, Bitmart, to build a viable stable token economy to power the company’s distributed labor marketplace. With its existing software application, NYNJA allows teams to work better, through improved collaboration and communication for remote workers. With the addition of the distributed labor marketplace, teams will have the added benefit of being able to hire and scale elastically and rapidly.

NYNJA App

NYNJA App

NYNJA is currently available for download for iOS, Android, PC and Mac. The company has an aggressive roadmap to launch a crypto wallet for peer-to-peer payments and crypto storage as well as NYNJA’s decentralized labor marketplace in the next two quarters. When the NYNJACoin is launched, businesses will have real time access to thousands of remote workers, including the ability to pay with Bitcoin, Ethereum, credit card or using NYNJACoin at a discounted rate. NYNJA’s innovative blockchain-based talent assignment and arbitration engine allows businesses to tap NYNJA’s labor marketplace to find the best possible talent for whatever task they have, in real time. By pairing businesses with the past possible talent available across the entire available talent pool, NYNJA accelerates the pace of hiring and ultimately of getting the job done.

“Imagine you could hire a designer, a web developer, or a blogger as simply and as quickly as you would hire an Uber. But unlike existing platforms that really act like job boards, NYNJA will find the absolute best available talent on the marketplace for your project based on their reputation stored on the blockchain,” said NYNJA’s Co-founder and CEO, JR Guerrieri. Adding, “NYNJACoin allows both businesses and professionals to transact at scale in a way not currently possible. By listing our utility token on Bitmart we have a partner exchange with the global reach and audience, especially in South Korea, China and the United States to make the most dramatic impact possible, to accelerate the future of work.”

NYNJACoin (NYN) launches on August 15 on Bitmart. Accounts can be created to trade NYN on www.bitmart.com.
